Teodora's Book Reviews: "Dreamer Ballerina" by Sarah Rubin

Some weeks ago, I found a new book entitled “Dreamer Ballerina”. On the cover it was written, “All you need is a dream and two feet!” The story sounded interesting, so I took the book and started to read it. I really liked “Dreamer Ballerina”. Most books about ballet are really nice. Casey Quinn is the main character of the story. She lives in Warren with her mother and her grandmother. Casey’s dream is to be a famous ballerina. She dances almost every time. Like in all the stories, the main character has an enemy. The bad character is... Miss Priss Ann-Lee. With her gang, she teases Casey, telling her that she will never become a talented ballerina. Casey tries to be courageous. She soon finds out about a famous ballet school in New York. Because her family is poor, Casey starts to work at her mom’s hospital to earn money for a bus ticket. I think Casey is a really nice character. She works so hard to make her dream come true! Mom and Gran are so proud of her! Every time I read ...

Teodora's Book Reviews: “Labradoodle on the Loose” by T. M. Alexander

My favorite book was “Labradoodle on the Loose” by T. M. Alexander. This book is about the adventures of five friends: Bee, Copper Pie, Fifty, Jonno and Keener (of course, these are only their nicknames). They have their own club called “Tribe”. The Tribers have fun getting in and out of danger. It’s non-stop for Tribe! In this book, there are three nice stories called “Fifty’s Kidnap”, “Bee’s Birthday” and “Red-Handed”. I liked all of them, especially the first one. “Fifty’s Kidnap” is for those who have brothers or sister and love them very much! Fifty caused all sorts of mayhem. He was worried that his sister, Rose, would feel alone and sad at the nursery. Fifty loved his sister very much and he wanted to protect her from anything dangerous. When the Tribers went out to have a picnic, troubles started... First of all, Keener, who was in charge of Bee’s dog, Doodle, made a terrible mistake: instead of watching Doodle, he went to a boy called Marco to learn to mountain board. The...

Teodora's Book Reviews: “The Magic Box” by Kit Wright

One of my favorite books was “The Magic Box” by Kit Wright. This “box” contains a lot of funny poems, ready to be read and to make the readers laugh. In all this sea of poems, I chose some of them. I think that the chosen ones are really funny and well made. The first two poems are from page 6. One of them is entitled “Nutter”. The comparisons are really nice (“The moon’s a big white football / The sun’s a pound of butter/The earth is going round the twist / And I’m a little nutter!”). The second poem is called “Some People”. It’s funny when the author says this: “I told my friend a secret/”It dies with me.” he said / Then he dropped dead / You can’t tell some people anything!” At first, I didn’t understand the lines. Then, when I read it one more time, I just started to laugh. It was hilarious; you know, when you’re dead, all the secrets you know die with you. You can’t tell them anymore. :) This book has poems with tongue twisters inside them. I found three. The first one is fro...

Teodora's Book Reviews: “Sky Hawk” by Gill Lewis

Another interesting book was “Sky Hawk” by Gill Lewis. This story was indeed captivating. Callum (or Cal, for short) is the main character. He met a really nice girl named Iona. The two kids became friends. When Iona told Cal she got a secret to show him, I was excited. I knew that soon the two friends would see something special: the sky hawk. I was glad when I discovered that I was right: “I saw the secret hidden in our valley. No one else knew about it. Not Mum or Dad, or Graham, or Rob and Euan. Just me, and Iona. It was... an osprey!” Ospreys were rare, so to keep it safe from harm, Cal and Iona did not tell a soul. They were taking such good care of the osprey. They watched it how it build its nest, found its mate and went fishing. When I read this paragraph “It’s the osprey. I think she is dead.” I was scared. The osprey was hurt because of a fishing line, which cut her foot. Luckily, Cal and Iona called out for help from Cal’s dad and Hamish, a man who knew a lot about a...

Teodora's Book Reviews: “Olivia’s First Term” by Lyn Gardner

One of my favorite books was “Olivia’s First Term” by Lyn Gardner. It’s a book packed with adventures and excitement. I liked this story because it’s about a girl of my age, a girl who is very nice and courageous. She is very talented... Well, let’s not stay lolly-gagging here; I will tell you some important things about this book... And my opinion about all these... Olivia is the main character. She is twelve. She is used to circus life; she enjoys high wire walking! Olivia’s life was very good, until her mum, Toni, died in an accident with the high wire walking... Jack, Olivia’s dad, became poor and had to find a new job, leaving the circus behind... Olivia and her sister, Eel (of course, this is a nickname!) are at a stage school: The Swan. Alicia Swan, their grandmother on the mum’s side, owned the school. This place made Olivia really angry! She wanted to be a circus girl again! I just hate when people have fights. I felt sad when Alicia Swan told Jack “You’re not a fit fat...

Teodora's Book Reviews: “The Minivers on the run” by Natalie Jane Prior

Another book that I liked was “The Minivers on the run” by Natalie Jane Prior. The Minivers are the most famous girls in Artemisia. They’re rich, talented princesses, chart-topping pop stars with their own fashion label and millions of adoring fans. When I first heard of two pop stars, I thought, “Yes, another two girls being very famous and adored... This story might be like in the real life...” But I was totally impressed when I discovered that Rosamund and Emily Miniver are only two feet tall! I tried to imagine two girls who were ten (Emily) and fourteen (Rosamund), singing and giving autographs to their fans, but it was a bit hard. I said to myself: “Now this is a story with a brand new adventure, waiting just for me to be read!” Those two talented princesses, with their red silk halter-neck dresses, covered in sequins, dressed in shimmering green, with gold sandals, have no idea that behind the show-biz glamour, ruthless enemies are plotting to kidnap them. The tiny sisters...

Teodora's Book Reviews: “Star Makers Club - Phoebe finds her Voice” by Anne-Marie Conway

“Star Makers Club – Phoebe finds her Voice” by Anne-Marie Conway is a story about a really talented girl called Phoebe. There are some problems in her life, though: Polly Carter, an enemy, Monty B, her annoying, but strangely funny neighbor, and, most of all, Dad, living in another flat with his job gone and with spending time at a club... I liked the way Phoebe introduced herself (“My name’s Phoebe, by the way, Phoebe Franks, and I’m nearly twelve years old.”). This story starts with the Star Makers Club. At the beginning, Phoebe said, “I don’t even want to join the club. I’m going to karate lessons on Saturdays so I won’t have time anyway.” This made me sad, but I knew Phoebe would go to the Star Makers Club after all. I could just feel it! I went on reading the pages when I got to this part: “I laid down on my bed and stared up at my favorite poster of Donny Dallesio. Donny stretched his arm out of the poster – yes, right out of it – and gave me a thumbs up.” When I read this p...

Teodora's Book Reviews: “One dog and his boy” by Eva Ibbotson

I liked “One dog and his boy” by Eva Ibbotson. This book will steal your whole attention and, who knows, maybe your dog (if you have one)... You’re going to be off to one cool adventure! The fun begins with the title. That is so unusual... Everyone says “One boy and his dog”, not “One dog and his boy”... Hal is the main character. He is the boy who wants a dog. But when his mum said, “Think of the mess: hairs on the carpet and scratch marks on the door and the smell... Not to mention puddles on the floor!”, I felt sorry for Hal. I was angry with Hal’s mother. She only cared about her house to be clean every time. I realized that mum didn’t do the right thing, to ignore Hal’s request, especially on his birthday! Well, to tell you the truth, Hal finally got his most wanted dog... but for only three days! The dog came from Easy Pets Agency, a place where people took dogs for a while. The dog’s name was Fleck. Hal and Fleck were now best friends! I was so happy of this new lovely fr...

Teodora's Book Reviews: “Michael Rosen’s Big Book of Bad Things” by Michael Rosen

I liked “Michael Rosen’s Big Book of Bad Things” because it’s packed with brilliant poems you will want to read again and again. The author wrote about many things. My favorite poem was the one in which Michael Rosen wasn’t going to bed (when he was told to do so). The line “My mom says: "Michael, it’s time for bed!", all I hear is: "Michael, it’s time for -.” made me laugh. It reminded me that when I was little, I was doing almost the same thing as the writer. I was going to bed, but I couldn’t get to sleep. I always did different kind of things in bed, like playing or drawing. Of course, this isn’t the only thing I liked about this book. Believe it or not, I found myself in many poems written by Michael Rosen. For example, I liked this paragraph “I’m one second late for school and six school guards have arrested me. Where am I going, guys? To the school prison? But... it smells of feet!” When I read this poem, I said to myself that school does look like a prison.....

Teodora's Book Reviews: “Magicalamity” by Kate Saunders

I liked “Magicalamity” by Kate Saunders because it’s a fabulously funny story! The characters are off to a brand new adventure... Tom is the main character. His parents are in danger! The boy must trust his life to three fairy godmothers... Two of them are hardened criminals and one falls out of the window when she tries to fly... One of Tom’s remarks, “Can’t you hide me in the same place you hid my mother?”, shows his worry thoughts. He feels alone without his parents who are on a run, trying to be far away from some killer fairies... Sadly, the godmothers are always saying: “You’re not enough human for hiding with your mother!” The fairy godmothers are ready for everything: “All right, I know my duty... I suppose I’ll help!” They know that Tom’s father is innocent, that he did not kill a Falconer... Of course, let’s not forget about the godmothers’ kindness: “I guess you’d like a cup of tea...” When I read, “You ignored the godmother summons!”, I was feeling sad for Tom. The ...
