Câteva recenzii scurte, scrise în limba engleză de alte persoane, m-au făcut să-mi dau seama că este oarecum dificil să plasezi într-o anumită categorie romanul lui Frances Hardinge, Copacul minciunilor (titlul original fiind The Lie Tree ). Am găsit descrieri precum “ Victorian murder mystery ”, “ feminist triumph ”, “ revenge story ”, toate surprinzând câte o parte din esența poveștii respective. În universul acesta, însă, sunt Teo dor a și nu-mi rămâne altceva de făcut decât să-mi doresc să am cândva o vulpe, Pan dor a, și o fiică, Isi dor a. I’m still trying to decide what to begin with. The book cover seems to be the best starting point so far (I know there are different editions, but hear me out). A miniature girl gazing at a miniature mountain backdrop plastered over a huge pencil (if education as the main theme wasn’t obvious already). But in all seriousness, the cover design grew on me immediately after I shyly entered Tara Westover’s small world in Buck’s Peak, Idaho. Given the drawing style, at times the recollected memories would become part of this elaborate graphic novel in my head, with main scenes brought to life through expressive looks and speech bubbles containing the crucial jerking replies. In retrospect, I think I have automatically chosen to disguise Tara’s life events in a friendlier comic-like manner, as a superhero’s evolution in a cramped space, with cliffhangers and few moments to breathe. Și avântul era cu cititorul. Și avântul era cititorul. Se poate demonstra, astfel, o anumită slăbiciune a noastră pentru povești. Poate încă avem de-a face cu ele dacă le redefinim ca fiind poezii fără rimă. În volumul scris de Emil-Iulian Sude, avem posibilitatea de a recurge la ghilimele pentru că, până la urmă, „ între ghilimele orice își schimbă semnificația ” (pag. 38, Atâta spaimă în liniștea lumii ). Bineînțeles, nu este acesta elementul-surpriză. Noutatea constă în faptul că poetul nostru atinge un nivel unde nu mai trebuie de fapt să apeleze la ghilimele, detașându-se de restul lumii. Detașarea presupune, însă, o anumită rătăcire temporară și multiple schimbări de perspectivă. Noi, ca cititori, ajungem să fim învăluiți de o atmosferă aparte, dar în același timp, suntem nevoiți să ținem pasul.

Children’s literature is most definitely an effective means of communicating a significant message, attracting kids and their suddenly (and similarly) curious parents. The straightforward aim of this story is to encourage youngsters to choose healthy snacks over fatty and sugary ones (or at least maintain a balanced diet). Sometimes that is not possible and this is where all readers should pay attention to a better hidden purpose, slipped in carefully among the pages. Adults may occasionally prove to be contradictory, pointing out one thing and doing the opposite, thus influencing children to head on a wrong direction. Some will detect the mistakes, but will take longer to alert

On a serious note, although I haven’t read many YA romance novels so far, I can easily tell that there is a strong tendency to depict teenagers as heavily interested in “deep” topics or thought-provoking questions – especially when they are around their crushes. At this rate, these are already nothing more than a cheap way for teens to temporarily hide their desire for a make-out session or to suggest that they are “more unique” than anyone else. The book makes you think about multiple issues at once – and you still reach a dead end (unless you are the legendary “hopeless romantic” and you write your 5-star rated review in-between tears and head shakes). Before launching into details, the title itself should be justified. The one-shot technique may come across as self-explanatory, in part. There are not many productions taking on this unusual art form and yet, most people may probably be familiarized with the notion of “one-shot movies” or, in other words, movies which are filmed in a single take. Surely, since one such attempt is an enormous challenge, plenty of directors go for the more accessible “twist”: the illusion that their film has been shot in one take. The accessibility does not necessarily mean that the strategy is instantly much easier. There are still various elements which make the whole process more demanding, but, proportionally, more rewarding.
