Teodora’s Movie Reviews: “Minions” (2015)

I suppose everyone has heard of Gru and his despicable (but also silly) minion clan. Their first movie, “Despicable Me”, was a big success back in 2010. Since then, the characters (especially the minions) have been everywhere on the internet. You have pictures, videos, e-cards with them... Name it and you have it! I guess a lot of people have grown fond of these cheeky yellow creatures throughout the years. I often asked myself why minions are so popular. What makes them so appreciated? The way they look? The way they talk? Their weird language?

The creators of “Despicable Me” have returned with a brand new sequel in which the minions are put into the spotlight. Probably the audience’s biggest wish... The movie was released this year, on the 10th of July, and it is directed by Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin (also the voice of the minions).

The storyline tells us that minions have existed since the beginning of time. They have only one purpose: to serve the most villainous master in the history. Finding one is easy... But keeping one is quite challenging. Minions serve a few masters, such as a T-Rex, a caveman, an Egyptian pharaoh, Dracula and Napoleon. Unfortunately they accidentally kill all of them. In the end they decide to start a new life in a cave in Antarctica. Time is passing by. At one point the minions realize that they don’t have any purpose at all. Their lives are most likely miserable.

One day a minion named Kevin decides to take the first step in finding a master for his clan. He is joined by two other minions, Stuart (who thinks he’s cool) and Bob (who has been selected due to... lack of volunteers). After a very long journey, the three friends make it to New York. They stop in a shopping center for one night. While they’re watching TV, they learn about Villain Con, a secret gathering held in Orlando, Florida. The following morning they manage to catch a free ride to Orlando, in the company of two parents and their children, who happen to be criminals.

Once they get to Villain Con, Kevin, Stuart and Bob search for the perfect master. After a series of fights, the three minions become the new henchmen for Scarlet Overkill, the first female villain in the world. She takes them to her residence in London and shares her new evil plan with the three friends. She wants to steal the royal crown from Queen Elizabeth II, in order to rule United Kingdom. Using special weapons made by Herb, Scarlet’s husband, Kevin, Stuart and Bob break into the Tower of London. However the crown is delivered to the Queen at the same time, so the three minions chase her and destroy her carriage. Afterwards some policemen try to catch the three little thieves. Bob gets to the mythical Sword in the Stone. In order to defend himself, he pulls the sword out easily. As the law says, Bob is crowned the new king of United Kingdom. Scarlet is feeling betrayed. From this point she and the minions are in a continuous fight.

Of course, the movie has a happy ending. Kevin, the real hero, saves the crown and returns it to its owner. Scarlet steals it once again, but she gets caught by a little boy (a villain in progress): Gru. As we have expected, the minions find their true master... I knew right from the start that the young Gru would be in the movie.

In my opinion, the film is nice, but not as good as “Despicable Me”. After watching the beginning, I thought the plot would be more interesting and ingenious. Unfortunately it turned out that the storyline wasn’t as I had expected. What I liked about the film, though, were the jokes. The movie is perfect for kids of all ages and, why not, even adults can enjoy it!

“Minions” made me watch the first two parts of “Despicable Me” once again. In the end I came to a conclusion: if you put the minions alone in one movie, the plot seems to be incomplete. Gru, Lucy, Margo, Edith, Agnes, Dr. Nefario and all the others are part of the picture as well. But as long as the minions are lovable characters, their story will be appreciated by a lot of people, too!
