“Mouse is doing his best to stay out of trouble. Cat is doing her best to land herself in it.” Two friends, only one winner in a game of cat and mouse... Mouse (real name, Martin – he is fourteen) is an ordinary boy who just happens to get in a lot of trouble... He likes to paint on walls or anything that is very large. Mouse likes graffiti art!
His uncle, Dave, who happens to be his social worker (“my favorite cheesy uncle – he’s not”), tells Mouse that he has to stay out of trouble... Well, Mouse has to change... He has no choice! (“I’m not kidding, Mouse – you can’t pull any more stunts like this. Every time things start going well for you, you do something stupid and mess it all up.”)
Mouse meets a girl named Cat (short from Catrin). She is also fourteen. They like each other. They start to spend a lot of time together!
After a while, Mouse realizes that Cat is doing her best to land herself in trouble... For example, she starts to steal things from shops... Mouse, because of Cat, lands (without wanting) in trouble, too! What can he do? He can hurt Cat’s feelings or something like that... He really likes her... Cat is not an ordinary girl, that’s for sure! (“Cat looks exotic, somehow, a world apart from the girls at Green Vale Comp, who chew gum with their mouths open and wear their trousers slung low and their heels slung high. She is a pretty mixed-race girl with honey-colored skin and slanting eyes. She is wearing a little green pleated skirt, knee-length grey socks and flat shoes.”)
One day, Mouse finds a dog. He calls it Lucky. But is this dog really bringing luck to Cat and Mouse? Well, that’s a very good question! Lucky is Mouse’s strange and dangerous neighbor’s dog. Mouse likes Lucky (“Lucky – well, Lucky is my best friend. His lopsided grin, his pirate patch, his murky past... I didn’t rescue him, he rescued me.”)! He doesn’t want to give it back! His neighbor didn’t even took too much care to his dog... (“Here, Stupid! Come here, Stupid!” – Practically, this was Lucky’s real name...)
Anyway, nothing can stop Scully (the neighbor) from getting back his dog! In the middle of the night, Cat and Mouse are caught by the police (find out for yourself why) and... Well, only one word to say: TROUBLE!
During this story, Mouse finds out some unpleasant things: 1. Cat is Dave’s daughter! 2. Cat is twelve, not fourteen! and 3. Cat was kind of a spy (she spent time with Mouse so she could tell Dave if he was getting in trouble or not anymore)! Cat regrets everything she had done. She knows that Mouse has been a good friend with her... (“Mouse is my friend. I don’t care if you believe me or not, but he has helped me – he’s taught me about right and wrong, about friendship, about love.”)
Mouse can’t believe that Cat is only twelve... (“Twelve-year-olds shouldn’t skive school or steal chocolates, and they shouldn’t kiss you the way Cat kisses me. Twelve? I rest my head in my hands.”)
Luckily, Mouse forgives Cat for doing all of this... She was his “lucky star” after all... (“Cat laughs. “What am I, a fleck of light from a faraway galaxy?” “Something like that.” I can’t tell her the truth, can I? I can’t tell her that in my sky, she’s the brightest star.”)
“A” Cat and “a” Mouse can be friends after all... Right?
I agree with the author’s words: “This book is about friendship, family, fear... It’s a roller coaster ride of drama, love and happiness...”
