Teodora’s Book Reviews: “Floors” by Patrick Carman

Welcome to the wildest hotel in the world, The Whippet Hotel. Find out its secrets, by reading the book!

The main character is Leo Fillmore. He is Clarence Fillmore’s son, the caretaker of the hotel.
Leo is my favorite character! (“Leo was a small boy of ten, with a sizeable blob of curly hair on top of his head.”) I like him because he’s the only one who knows the hotel’s secrets! The Whippet Hotel was built by Merganzer D. Whippet. This hotel isn’t an ordinary one; it’s built quite strange... Let’s just call it: Mr. Whippet’s wacky “invention”.
Merganzer D. Whippet is quite a strange man. He built a wacky hotel and afterwards he simply... vanished. Nobody had any idea where he could have gone... From the day he disappeared, Ms. Sparks, a horrible woman with a beehive-shaped hair, became the hotel manager.
Leo and his dad win money by cleaning the hotel. There is also a door boy named Remilio (but you can call him Remi) and his mother, Pilar. Let’s not forget about the guests. They are either mad or mysterious...
The hotel is not strange just because it has been built wacky... Inside the hotel there are six ducks (that waddle everywhere) and lots of robots (some of them are quite helpful, but others are so annoying and talkative, that you can’t keep their mouths shut!).
Nobody loves the hotel more than Leo! He knows the hotel like the back of his hand. He knows every nine floors... But he has quite a surprise when he finds in the duck elevator four strange boxes (purple, blue, green and white) that lead him to secret hidden floors... Leo has quite an adventure with Remi, the door boy (and his best friend by far!), Betty, the duck leader (and his favorite duck, too!) and Blop, the most talkative (and friendliest!) robot in the whole world! Those four friends don’t even have to take a step outside. They can find the most adventurous... adventures... right here, in the Whippet Hotel!
Leo and Merganzer D. Whippet are very, very good friends! Leo misses his wacky friend very much! He even counts the days since Merganzer disappeared... The part I liked best is when Leo found Merganzer on the thirteenth floor! After so many days... (“Betty is busy.” said the man in the long gray coat. “What did you say?” Leo asked, not because he hadn't heard, but because he had. He knew that voice. “She’s laid her eggs and is going to have babies!” yelled the man in the long gray coat, and he threw off his hat, which revealed a wild whip of hair that simply would not stay down no matter how hard he tried. He turned – and it was not Bernard Frescobaldi, for there was no Bernard Frescobaldi. It was Merganzer D. Whippet, as it always had been. “Merganzer?” Leo gasped, first smiling, then laughing and running and hugging his old friend. “The one and only! Me, me and only me! And did you hear the news? Betty’s having BABIES!”)
I also liked the part when Merganzer D. Whippet gave Leo... the whole Whippet Hotel! (“You can’t mean it.” said Leo, turning back to Merganzer. “You can’t really want to give me the Whippet Hotel. “Oh, but you’re wrong, Leo.” Merganzer replied. “I do want to give you the hotel. I can’t keep it; too much to do, too many places to go. You’re the only one for Whippet.”)
Mr. Whippet gives Leo the deed to the Whippet Hotel and the silver key card that can open any doors (secret or not) in the whole hotel! Mr. Whippet knows that the Whippet Hotel is in good hands...
Those two friends have a lot in common: they both lost their mothers too soon, each of them has a very good friend and... they both love the Whippet Hotel very much!
I didn’t like it when Ms. Sparks (the demon hotel manager lady!) accused Remi’s mother, Pilar, for stealing a guest’s necklace. Of course, it wasn't Pilar’s fault; Ms. Sparks stole the necklace, but she just wanted to get Remi and his mother into trouble because she hated them! (“Here’s what I think. I think you’re all in this together. I think it’s all an elaborate setup. And do you know what else?” “Here we go.” Remi whispered to Leo. “Nice knowing you.” “You are all, each and every one of you,” said Ms. Sparks, drawing in a great breath of air and pausing for effect, “FIRED!”)
When Ms. Sparks said, “FIRED!” I was scared and felt sorry for Remi and Pilar. Luckily, when Leo gets his hands on the Whippet Hotel, he fires Ms. Sparks! Ha, serves her right! :)
I would recommend this book to anyone who is adventurous and likes staying at hotels... to discover their secrets!
I give the book five stars, for the incredible adventures and the laugh-out-loud moments! :)
