Teodora’s Book Reviews: “Philippa Fisher’s Fairy Godsister” by Liz Kessler

If you believe in fairies, then this book is perfect for you!
The fun with the fairies starts with the title. That is so unusual... Everyone knows that godmothers appear in stories, not godsisters... It looks like Philippa Fisher is going to meet a young fairy...
Who is Philippa Fisher? She is the main character of the story. Her parents are party entertainers. They are very wacky. Philippa loves their tricks and games very much, but sometimes she wishes she could change them a bit... Okay, maybe a lot! They embarrass her (without wanting) in public...
Philippa Fisher has a friend called Charlotte. Sadly, she has to move to a farm. Philippa is very sad! Charlotte is her BEST friend! She doesn’t have other true friends like Charlotte... Life from now on might be boring after all... Or not?
On their last day of meeting, Philippa and Charlotte went in their tree house to make some daisy chains... Right then, something magical happened... (“As I stared, a breeze blew across the clearing, making the daisies dance and sway. One of them stood out instantly. It was taller than the others and it seemed to bend right over, towards me, almost as though it was asking to be picked. I reached out for it. As I did, a tear plopped out of my eye, landing on the daisy. “Oops, sorry.” I said absentmindedly. The daisy nodded back at me, as though accepting my apology. It had understood me! The daisy has heard me; it has answered me!”)
Philippa knows a song about fairies (“Fairy come, fairy go / Fairy, oh, I need you so / If I count from nought to nine / At midnight, fairy please be mine.”). The daisy that moved was the ninth from her daisy chain. Philippa is deep impressed! (“The daisy was going to turn into a fairy at midnight.”)
Meet Daisy, Philippa’s godsister (“She looked my age – not my mother’s! “I’m still not going to call you my fairy godmother.” I said. “It doesn’t sound right.” Daisy sighed. “OK, forget the whole “mother” thing if it bothers you that much.” she said. “Think of me as your fairy godsister.” “But there’s no such thing!” “Oh, really? What am I, then? A figment of your imagination?”). Daisy isn’t so... friendly. She is just here for an assignment, she doesn’t like humans very much... (“The quicker the assignment’s done, the sooner I’m out of here.” she went on. “Then we can both put the whole thing behind us and never have to see each other again.”)
Philippa gets a 3WD (Three Wish Department) from Daisy... Three Wish Vouchers, to be understood. At every shooting star, Philippa has to say her wish.
Philippa finds out more details about this entire assignment. (“But just tell me this, is it really true that everyone has a fairy godmother?” “Pretty much.” Daisy replied. “Some have one just for a short job like this one. Others have one by their side for years. It depends on your life cycle for each one.” “Life cycle? What’s that?” “You materialize as something from nature for each assignment. And whatever you come from in nature determines how long you have to do your work.” “So you mean you have as long as a daisy’s normal lifespan? That’s the whole summer, isn’t it?” “Well, not exactly.” “Why not?” “Because I’ve been picked. It’s the lifespan of a picked daisy.” “A picked daisy? But that’s hardly anything!”) True. Philippa is absolutely right! The lifespan of a picked daisy is hardly anything! There are only ten days! But if Daisy and Philippa are going to work together, the assignment is going to be done... With success? You have to find out!
Philippa uses her two first wishes. She wishes to have normal parents and to become the most popular girl from school. These wishes don’t help her so much. Instead, they make her to feel worse than the first time... And Daisy has her own problems, too! She doesn’t give the full attention to her assignment... There aren’t many days left... Her life cycle is to an end... She drinks bottles and bottles of water... After a few adventure and unexpected surprises, Philippa uses her last wish. She wishes to undo the previous wishes and to give her courage and confidence for the talent competition from her school.
Daisy and Philippa learn a few things from this assignment. Philippa learns that it is very important to decide what we really, really want. Daisy learns that being a fairy godmother (or a fairy godsister, whatever) is not about finishing your assignment as quick as possible. It’s about being a good friend with the humans! The friendship between Daisy and Philippa makes the whole assignment good. (“You did a good job.” the white light of the cloud said to her. “You made your client happy – and you passed your extra task. You have developed a level of compassion that enables you to move on to higher levels now.” “Thank you.” the girl replied with a smile. “But I did get to work with the best person in the world!” The cloud smiled back, bunching up and bouncing into a new shape. “I believe she may feel the same way about you too, Daisy.” The girl’s smile broadened even more.”)
I can’t wait to read more books with Philippa Fisher! I am sure that she and Daisy are going to meet once again... someday... (“The girl walked into the rainbow, the sides of her body shimmering and dissolving until she had disappeared altogether. The rainbow brightened, glistening its full arc in colors so bright that the humans who saw it would talk about it for days afterwards. And a little while later, somewhere down on earth, a beautiful butterfly slowly edged out of its cocoon as it came to life and awaited further instructions.”)
