Teodora’s Book Reviews: “White Dolphin” by Gill Lewis

After reading “Sky Hawk” by Gill Lewis, I thought it was time for “White Dolphin”! I think Gill Lewis really loves animals... Don’t you think? Even on the book cover it says: “Gill Lewis spent much of her childhood in the garden where she ran a small zoo and a veterinary hospital for creepy-crawlies, mice, and birds. (...) She lives in the depths of Somerset with her husband and three children and writes from a tree house in the company of squirrels.”
This story is about a girl named Kara. She is the main character. She lives with her father, her uncle, Tom, her aunt, Bev, and her cousin, Daisy. Kara’s mother disappeared one day. Nobody knows how... Kara and her father have a boat called Moana. Kara’s parents built this boat. Kara’s dad wants to sell Moana so he can afford more money... But Kara doesn’t even want to hear such a thing! Moana means a lot to her! Her life is already hard and she doesn’t want to complicate it anymore... She has got a terrible enemy, Jake Evans (the son of Dougie Evans). Dougie Evans wants to destroy the reef. Why? Well, to win more money... How can he win money if he destroys the reef? That’s a good question! Read the story to find out!
Anyway, Kara doesn’t want the reef to be destroyed! She needs to make her own decisions! In the company of a new friend, Felix (in the beginning, the two of them can’t stand each other), Kara saves an injured white dolphin. After the white dolphin (named Angel by Daisy) is healed, it goes back to its mother in the sea. Kara somehow feels that her mother is somewhere out there... with the mother dolphin! Miss Pendula (a mad old woman, as many people would say) told Kara one day that the dolphins were “the angels of the sea”. If Kara wants to find her mother, she has to listen to the dolphins... Did I make you curious? ;)
My favorite part was in the end when, after a few adventures (saving the reef, the loss of Moana... oops, I shouldn’t have said that!), Kara says: “Then I see her. I see Angel leap from the centre. (...) She leaps again and I watch her twist and turn before she plunges back into the water. (...) I know deep down inside, the white dolphin will never be alone. The vast blue ocean is waiting for her, and this is only the beginning of her story.”
I didn’t like the parts when Jake Evans was bullying Kara: “Jake laughs. “Learnt to spell your name yet, Kara? K-a-r-a W-o-o-d. Kara-thick-as-two-planks-of-wood.” I think (I’m not sure) that Kara has dyslexia... Jake wouldn’t have told Kara this if she hadn’t had dyslexia, don’t you think? :/
I would recommend this book for everyone... especially for those who are interested in taking care of the environment! ;) At the end of the book, you can find out the reason why Gill Lewis wrote the book, Top Twelve Fascinating Dolphin Facts, Useful Websites (if you want to find out more about protecting our oceans) and Want to Help?. Enjoy the book and comment if you think that “Sky Hawk” and “White Dolphin” are very much alike: both books talk about an injured animal which is saved by the main character! :)

Five stars for the book, five stars for the environment! :)
