“Moon Man” is an interesting book! It’s about a boy’s dream... A dream that may come true, only with the help of the Noitanigami...
(A little note: If you are going to read the book, then you will see that the name of each chapter is spelled backwards: “Na Lausunu Yob”, “A Ylpeed Gnipeels Dadnarg”, “Eno Gel Retrohs Naht Eht Rehto”, “Eno Tnaig Pets” etc. Strange and cool, at the same time... Don’t you think?)
Meet Walter Speazlebud, an unusual boy... Or, should I say, “Retlaw Dubelzaeps, na lausunu yob”? He has the power of Noitanigami. He and his grandfather are often wondering: did the moon landing really happen? They want to find out the answer as soon as possible... But how?
You might think: what is Noitanigami? It’s Imagination, spelled backwards. Walter can spell backwards very quickly! And not only that: he can move backwards animals, people or anything else! (“What’s “astronaut” backwards?” somebody asked. “Tuanortsa.” said Walter. Annie Zuckers closed her eyes as if savoring the sound of the word Walter had created. “Extraordinary?” she said. “Yranidroartxe.” “Concentration?” “Noitartnecnoc.” said Walter. “That’s one of my favorites.” “Supercalafragalisticexpeadalidocious.” said Mike Snuddlidge, sneering. “Suoicodilaepxecitsilagarfalacrepus.” Walter rattled off, quick as lightning. Mike Snuddlidge hissed. “That’s pretty amazing, Walter.” said Miss O’Connor.”; “On the third “Reed”, the deer zipped backwards and across the road, escaping the truck by inches.”)
Walter is quite surprised when he finds out that his Grandad is a master of Noitanigami. He knows how to find out if the moon landing is real or not! He decides to send Walter back in time, back in the year of 1969, when the moon landing happened. (“When you touched the Ruby Giftstone you received seven gifts.” said Grandad. “A “gift” in Noitanigami is a single use of the power. When you have used all of your seven gifts you will be the assessed by the Master and Keeper of the Ruby Giftstone.” “Who’s that?” asked Walter curiously. “Me.” said Grandad.; “T-travel b-back in t-time!!” stuttered Walter. “How?” “You will be sent back in time, but you must choose the place and time you wish to journey to.”)
Well, Walter is send... (drum roll, please)... back in time! He accepts the “mission”. To his surprise, Annie Zuckers is with him, too! (“Annie! What are you doing here?” “I was walking home from the lake when I noticed something like a smoke ring coming towards me. Next thing, I was sucked into it at the speed of light, and dropped in a strange house in America in the late 1960s, if that newspaper in the hallway is correct!”; “Any suckers?” said Grandad. Now Levon was really confused. “Excuse me?” “Any suckers?”; “Please ask me if I have any sucking mints like you did when I arrived this morning.” “This is a very silly game, Levon... Any Zuckers!” This time even Grandad could clearly hear how his “S” sometimes sounded like a “Z”. Suddenly, his expression changed from one of mild bemusement to one of extreme horror. “This is a terrible mistake! In all my time as a Noitanigamist I’ve never sent an innocent bystander back in time. This is a disaster. We’ll have to bring her home immediately!”)
Before continuing to read, you have to answe a question: are you ready to land on the moon? If the answer is “yes”, then go in a brand new adventure with Walter, Annie and Bob Speazlebud (Grandad’s brother). If the answer is “no”, then STOP RIGHT HERE!
Bob Speazlebud was working at NASA. He knew Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin etc. After some spying and some fake moon landing scenes (I bet that you already want to read this book! :D ), Walter Speazlebud goes to the moon with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. He is the first man to step on the moon! “This is one small step for Man, one giant leap for mankind.” Or like Walter and Grandad say: “That’s one big step for a small man.”
Walter is very proud of himself. He went back in time, he stopped the people from the NASA from faking the moon landing and he went on the moon... Walter couldn’t have done all of this without Grandad’s help. All his family and friends believed him, believed that he can really go to the moon!
The story ends quite sad... (“He heard his grandad singing next door and it made him smile. “Ho Ynnad Yob / Eht sepip eht sepip era gnillac / Morf nelg ot nelg / Dna nwod eht niatnuom edis...” He knew that Grandad, too, could see that big old moon through his window, lighting up the sky, calling men and women to venture in the heavens. Walter took a deep breath and joined in. “Eht s’remmus enog / dna lla eht sevael era gniyd / sit uoy sit uoy / tsum og dna I tsum edib...” They sang together, the moon illuminating their faces, until Grandad’s voice gradually became quieter, then faded like the stars at dawn.”)
